There is no Article

I almost never get any email from anyone regarding this website, but I’m sure if I did it would probably include questions about why articles appear so sporadically here on Bactroid.net. Wonder no more, good readers! Here is list of what I’ve been doing when I could have been writing a new article for Bactroid.net!

Playing Neverwinter Nights. I’m not sure how they did it, but Bioware/Black Isle have somehow included subliminal messages in this game that make it more addicting than crack. That’s the only way I can explain how much I’ve been playing this game. When I’m not playing it, I’m sad to admit that I’m wishing that I were playing it. I’ve started about a bizillion characters, but the ones that I’ve actually played beyond the prologue are an elven rogue and a half-elven ranger. I keep telling myself that I should write a review of Neverwinter Nights for the site, but everytime I sit down to write it, I accidentally (?) start playing the game again. The game even has my wife addicted(1). My only real complaint with the game thus far involves the way female half-elves look in a breastplate. They look like they’re wearing an armored swimsuit. No self-respecting adventurer(2) would be seen running into melee combat with her legs so unprotected.

Spending time with my wife. I just got married about a year ago. My wife and I are still newlyweds. I honestly enjoy talking to her about whatever crosses our minds. We’ve been known to stay up for hours talking about the most mundane things, and I enjoy every damn minute of it.

Reading. Those of you who actually read AdminWatch on the front page(3) will notice that I recently read Soulforge by Margaret Weis, a Dragonlance novel which I enjoyed immensely. I’ve also been reading through The Lord of the Rings by Tolkien. I’m in The Two Towers now, and I must say that the series takes a big upswing in interest for me toward the end of Fellowship of the Ring. I’m a total Legolas fanboy. When I finish The Lord of the Rings (or when I give up on it), I intend to read through the Dragonlance Chronicles series again.

Playing with my cat. Tux is the cutest predator who has ever lived in my house. We like to play fun games like “Distract Me Before I Kick Your Ass” and “I’ll Stalk You and Slay Your Legs”.

Learning about JCL/TSO/ISPF and everything else about my new job. I absolutely love my new job. For the first time in my life, I don’t have to interact with outside customers. I interact with machines and other programmers mostly. I also get to wear jeans and tshirts to work. This is absolutely wonderful. There’s a pretty decent learning curve though so I’m having to pay a lot of attention to what’s going on and absorb as much of it as I can.

Looking at random websites. In addition to the usual offenders (Fark, Sluggy Freelance, and Root Prompt for example), I’ve also been spending a lot of time looking through all the gaming stuff at Sean K. Reynolds’ website and Monte Cook’s website.

Playing Dungeons and Dragons. I game once a week now since my job hours changed. Right now, I’m playing Gawain Gladestalker, an elven bladesinger (Fgt2/Brd2). Toby is running the campaign, which is set twenty-five years in the past in Forgotten Realms in an effort to set up a bit of history for our usual characters.

Sleeping. I’m usually asleep from the hours of 02:00-11:00. This is absolutely wonderful. I have about three hours of goof-off time once I get off from work and then I get to essentially sleep through the morning. This schedule is absolutely perfect, and I have my new job to thank for it.

Getting my car fixed over and over again. My car, a 1995 Toyota Corolla with only around 60,000 miles on it, has broken twice in the past several weeks. The first time, it was the belt in my car that drives the alternator and power steering. Next, it was the starter, meaning that we had to get the stupid thing towed to the mechanic. I’m extremely tired of fixing cars. With the money I’ve spent on cars, I could have bought a G3 iMac.

Footnotes

  1. Of course her addiction is nowhere near the level of her addiction to The Sims. They should put a warning label on that game. For a while, I was afraid that Tux and I were going to have to have an intervention.
  2. …other than Jeremy’s Priestess of Sharess Lucy…
  3. I insist on believing that there are some of you out there.
