Sunday Potpurri

Over the past week, I have run three days and walked over 5 km on my rest days. Today, I took a well-deserved day of complete rest. My body, I think, missed the exercise though because it complained about soreness in my back pretty much all day. Now, I could chalk this up to sleeping funny on my futon last night, but it’s much more fun to imagine that my body has become so conditioned to daily exercise that it hurts when I don’t hit the road.

My back pain and Allyson’s desire for a real non-futon bed inspired us to mosey down to the local furniture store to purchase a proper bed. You see, since the whole bedbug saga three or four years ago, we’ve not had a normal bed. For over a year, we slept on a series of air mattresses that could be discarded at a moment’s notice, and then we eventually graduated to a really nice futon we bought from a local specialty store. After a couple of years of sleeping on that, we’ve finally gotten around to replacing our mattress, foundation, and frames. And being an insatiable bon vivant, I somehow convinced Allyson that we needed a Tempurpedic bed. We opted for the Classic queen size because we honestly liked it more than the more expensive models.

I can’t wait to have this bed in my house. My favorite part of sleeping on the futon has been the absolute lack of any motion transfer. Allyson, you see, is not the type of sleeper who remains stationary. We even invented a new word to describe Allyson’s sleeping process: fitching. It’s blending of “fit pitching” with a smattering of “bitching”. When I first started sharing a bed with Allyson, I didn’t get much sleep. And I don’t mean that in any sort of newlywed double entendre. I honestly mean that my ability sleep suffered. You see, I’m the world’s lightest sleeper. I don’t actually sleep for more than an hour or so at a time. I wake up, assess my surroundings, check the clock, and—if everything is in order—go immediately back to sleep. If Allyson is moving around, just the hint of motion will snap me right awake for at least a couple of hours. The Tempurpedic feels like a soft cozy individual cocoon, and I didn’t notice any motion even when Allyson was getting in and out of the model beds. If backs had salivary glands, mine would be like one of Pavlov’s dogs during “Chorus of the Bells”.

I seem to do a lot of cooking over the weekend these days. Yesterday, I made an apple and cheese casserole using cheddar Vegan-rella by basically making up shit in the kitchen, and oh my Lord, I enjoyed the end result. Then, I got up this morning and prepped my dough for vegan matzoh balls. No, I’m not Jewish. I just thought matzoh balls would be a fun new dish to try. While my dough was resting in the fridge, I made tofu scramble for Allyson’s breakfast and my second breakfast(1). We had the matzoh ball soup for lunch, and it was a big hit with Allyson and me. Allyson even had some more for dinner tonight. To top it off, for a nice mid-afternoon snack (after afternoon dessert but before the late afternoon Luna bar), I made some black bean dip/spread out of canned black beans, salsa, chipotle hot sauce, and Tofutti Sour Supreme. If I didn’t have an office job, I would probably cook multi-dish meals for nearly every meal that rolled around. I love being in my kitchen, so I tend to spend a lot of hours there in my free time.

And that’s about all I have to say.

Footnotes

  1. Yes, like a hobbit, I essentially graze all through the day. I find that it helps me make better dietary decisions when I’m not starving. It also keeps my energy up much better now that I’m running.
