Bactroid.net
Where did you get the name "Bactroid"? Did you make that up? Is it a real term?
Bactroid was the very first tabletop RPG character that I ever created. He was a mutant superhero in the Marvel Super Heroes RPG back in late 1980s. As originally rolled up, he had the following powers:
- Enlargement. Bactroid could increase his mass such that he was around 90 feet (about 27.5 m) tall.
- Self-duplication. Bactroid could make exact duplicates of his body, and at the time of death, his consciousness would transfer over to the new body.
- Sonic blasts. Bactroid's tail emitted sonic blasts capable of damaging objects and enemies.
- Fire. Bactroid could shoot fire out of his chest.
Eventually, his story was tweaked a great deal because I got really sick of the whole mutant thing. Bactroid was originally a research scientists studying the feasibility of using viruses to reengineer genetic code, possibly curing diseases like cancer or even HIV. Accidental exposure to the a virus sample led to a reengineering of his own genetic structure. Because it seemed apropos, Bactroid lost a lot of his stranger powers (I'm looking at you, chest fireaballs) and became a disease carrier, able to contain any known disease without himself becoming sick.
When my parents became convinced that RPGs were the work of Satan, I had to throw away all of my gaming material, but the idea of and fondness for Bactroid lingered on until I needed a domain name. To the best of my knowledge, the term was completely made up by my ten-year-old mind.
Religion and Faith
What religion are you?
I consider myself a Christian Buddhist, someone who believes in and tries to implement the teachings of both Jesus of Nazareth and Siddartha Guatama (the Buddha). I believe in the Christian concept of salvation from the penalty of sin by acceptance of Christ's sacrifice and also believe in liberation from the effects of suffering by following the tenets laid out in the Eightfold Path. I believe that I am called to be a Living Buddha and a Living Christ, healing the hurts and transforming the pain of those around me. Because I am wary of the concept we refer to as "self", I believe in a kind of universal salvation that requires me (by internal requirement rather than dogma) to show love, kindness, and respect to everyone I meet.
Work
What do you do for a living?
I work at the University of Florida Registrar's Office as a computer programmer. I tinker with production jobs in a z/OS mainframe environment. In addition, I build online web pages linked to a mainframe data store using the proprietary EAGLE environment developed in-house at the UF Registrar's Office.
