Personal Mission Statement
From Digital Alterity Wiki
I am an artist and a free spirit. I create because I must, and I don't impose other people's limits by incessantly asking "why" when I'm more concerned with "what" and "how".
I am a hacker. I refuse to fight my natural urge to tinker because even the best systems can be improved if I try hard enough to find the bottlenecks. I understand that creativity can reveal unintended results and seek to use these exploits in innovative ways to improve my life and the lives of those in my charge. I will not be distracted by that which is broken. When I encounter problems, I will solve what I can one action at a time. I will not criticize without a suggested plan for improvement. "Good enough" isn't good enough for me.
I am eternally a student. I strive to yield to a beginner's mind free of prejudice. I approach each lesson with the goal of learning enough to teach it to someone else. I endeavor to listen to the opinions of others without hammering them into my own convenient mold. I believe that constant learning will keep me from stagnation, and I seek to find the lessons that the life in front of me seeks to teach. I take up those subjects which interest me because my time is a limited resource. Nonetheless, I will always make time to share my accumulated knowledge with a spirit of openness and humility.
I am a storyteller. I live my life to learn new stories and share the stories I've learned with those who have the ears to hear and the hearts to receive what I have to tell. I am compelled to write because I often don't understand my own thoughts until I've formulated words to describe them. I keep my eyes open for new opportunities, and I will keep my mouth shut when it might undermine my ability to live in the moment.
I am punk rock. I'm not ashamed of what I believe, what I'm interested in, or what the neighbors might think. I accept that my life is my own to live, and I believe that living according to the values of others will only lead to a life I didn't choose. I accept responsibility for the choices I make and refuse to hold others responsible for the messes I've created. If I make a mistake, I admit it and then make it right...whatever it takes. I will not abide injustice and refuse to be a party to anything I deem evil according my values and my mercurial whims.
I am a caretaker. I strive to transform the suffering of those around me into joy and mindful awareness. I will protect those I am responsible for with my very life. I find commonality with others but let them continue to be as they are without violently exporting myself. I seek to protect rather than destroy, and I strive to work toward the greater good. I never leave anyone behind. We succeed together, and we also fail together. I take care of myself as well as I would take care of any other person.
Values
- Compassion. I care deeply for every being I come into contact with, and I am willing to help even when it means self-sacrifice.
- Mindfulness. I believe that each moment is a moment to more fully become the person I want to be. I accept that the moment in front of me is all I have and endeavor to focus my full attention on the task at hand.
- Creativity. I write, draw, perform, and create because I believe that art is the expression of living in God's own image. My art seeks to clarify, entertain, and inform through the lens of the unique perspective I've been gifted with.
- Learning. I believe that daily education is the key to avoiding stagnation and irrelevance. I endeavor to learn as many skills and trivia as possible so that I may best accomplish the goals in front of me.
- Humor. I am always willing to laugh at the situations in front of me because intense seriousness is often attachment in disguise. I do not allow my humor to tear down others.
- Tenacity. I refuse to give up just because something is hard. All the things in life truly worth doing are notoriously difficult. Adversity only strengthens my resolve and increases the sense of accomplishment when I succeed.
- Courage. I don't let my fear stop me from doing what's right, and I will not allow my actions to be guided by fear. If my principles require risk, I will boldly face that risk to serve others, myself, and the greater good.
- Freedom. I seek to liberate myself and willing others from enslaving enterprises, behaviors, and thoughts.
